One of my all time favorite heroes is Spider-Man , a fictional character from the Marvel Comics Universe. (The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko. First appearing in Amazing Fantasy #15 ,Aug. 1962)
Since his Creation, Spider-Man has consistently shared his Creed, taught to him by his alter-ego’s late Uncle Ben-
” With Great Power comes,Great Responsibility!”
This is a great lesson ,one more than just a handful of people need to take to heart. And of the people that do learn this even fewer, stop to consider scope of what it implies. The key words in this statement (Power & Responsibility) do not simply represent an action-reaction, but a linked need for equivalence ,a balance between the two .
Most people can grasp the need for any amount of power to be meet with responsibility, for with out it you are left with a vacuum that often fills with corruption. Left unchecked you end up with (on the small scale) a bully
,(and on the large scale) absolute tyranny, and no sense of justice.
I find the opposite not only to be true but just as detrimental if not balanced(not to mention completely over looked). Given any amount of responsibility, one needs to have(or create) an equal base of power.
- In any Management Position,(be it political, corporate,or even military)if you are given over site on a project, but no authority, you are not a project manager, you are a fall guy. For you to be able to take responsibility you need to be able to exercise control over a given situation(Power).
- In any Relationship ,If you take on(or have), responsibility for another human life, But they refuse to submit to, or give any authority to you, you are in for a world of emotional chaos(and this goes both ways Boys & Girls). For a committed relationship to work, both parties need to be accountable to one another.
- In the dynamic of Parenthood, if the parent does not exercise their Authority(Power),it is self-evident that they have not taken responsibility for their child(ren).
The Best way for you to take control of your life is to take stock(expand your awareness) of the powers and what responsibilities you actually have. Don’t let the world around you, or any individual, tell you you don’t or can’t matter. Understand that you can seldom control people(only yoursel
f),you can only control situations and how you respond to them. Understand that the greatest Power you have is the one of choice, will you take responsibility for your own life…Yes or No ?
